My superpower involves skillfully tying three unrelated things together.

underthevangogh:

It took me five years of schooling and a boatload of student loans to develop said superpower, so I use it anytime I can—like when I’m talking about creations by other people that you should be checking out between stories!

Right, let’s get started.

Remember Blood Kiss?

That movie I was totally rambling about recently, which had a Kickstarter project and is slated to star Amber Benson and Neil “I’m a Great English Writer with Awesome Hair” Gaiman? It succeeded in not only reaching its $50,000 goal, they surpassed it by about $38,000! You can read more about that over at their KS page. While you’re there, why not give them a bit of congrats? I can’t wait to see the final product.

And speaking of Kickstarter ventures…

My friends over at VACANT have started a Kickstarter of their own! Their goal? To raise the $2,000 needed to take the first six chapters and synthesize it into Volume 1. They’ve got some sweet prizes to offer people who pledge, and you’ve got twenty-eight days to figure out which one you want!

Which is a good thing, because I still don’t know which one I want, either.

And speaking of comics…

Another super talented friend just recently self-printed a brand new comic called Derby 101, which serves as kind of a handy primer for those unfamiliar with the sport. You can get your hands on that, as well as some of her other comics, at her shop on Store Envy.

While you’re there, I highly recommend also springing for a Mystery Skull, mainly because they’re pretty rad.

Thanks for advertising the Kickstarter!!

WHAATT?? heather you are so successful. no one else i know is as dedicated as you. hang in there man you have an amazing story to tell. we just need to figure out how to market ourselves better.

Oh no I didn’t mean that. I meant my social life is a failure.

But I also don’t think I am that successful as a webcomic artist either. AHAHA!!

So I just sent off my Kickstarter for VACANT to be reviewed. Just letting everyone know that in the next few days it will probably be launching. I’ll be flooding tumblr with it probably. :)

Help with Kickstarter

At the back of volume 1 of VACANT, i want to do a “How it was done” section at the back. Does anyone have any questions about the process of how I do my work? Like about the character designs, how long it takes me, what I use, how I write, why i write the way I do, and so forth?

If not then I will just put in questions people have asked me at cons.

How to make friends:

mooncalfe:

glassshard:

bashko:

So someone asked this on tumblr so I thought maybe I’d share some tips, y’annow as a porn artist.

  • Initiate conversation If you want to be friends with someone, hit them up, you can’t just expect people to notice you without effort. Be brave, if you want something, do something about it.
  • Try not to mind read If someone isn’t talking to you, or paying you enough attention for instance don’t immediately go into a spiral of trying to read their mind. I know this is natural to do but hold back. I am pretty busy myself and I have a lot of people to talk to, I appreciate people talking to me, but usually I’m busy enough I’m only able to consistently initiate conversation with 2-3 friends.
  • Don’t worry about impressing them If you’re constantly trying to impress someone, it makes you less of a equal friend and more of a subordinate. That said I could use more subordinates. <3
  •  Don’t complain often This is a drag of a conversation, I only complain to people I’ve been friends with for a long time, even then I keep it sparse.
  • Ask them stuff, show interest in the person you are talking to,
I can’t count how many times I lost interest in someone because all they do is talk about themselves. People like other people who listen to them, it makes them feel valuable.
  • Find common interests I always use food as a starter, this gives me opportunity to find out more about them, also if the person doesn’t enjoy food I don;t think we can be friends.
  • Get excited about things together. Some friendships live and die in the span of a fandom, If you want to keep a friendship alive you might consider trying out new things your friend is into, so you guys can get excited about something and talk about it together. This is one of the more fun parts about being friends with someone. If you don’t like anything or aren’t willing to get into anything new, you probably aren’t that fun of a friend.
  • Don’t try to fuck them. People really appreciate other people who enjoy them for who they are, and conversely it’s insulting when someone only wants to be your friend cause they want to fuck you, it seems to indicate your personality isn’t worth their time.
  • Know when and when not to criticize. Although you may care about your friend, it’s not your immediate job to “fix them”. Constantly doing this just shows you view yourself as superior to your friend, and likely your friend will get tired of being looked down upon. This is especially nerve grinding when your criticism comes out in the form of insulting jabs that you constantly use over and over.
  • Know when to accept criticism.  At the same time, if your friend is truly a friend they do want to help you and help you improve. So try to recognize when your friend is honestly trying to help you, and avoid seeing this as an attack, if they are right in their criticism they can help you be a better person. Also they will appreciate you accepting their advice and won’t see giving you advice as a waste of time.
  • Do things for them without expecting anything in return. True love for another person consists of doing things for them just because you want to see them happy. It’s not about doing things for them and expecting a reward, that’s just being manipulative.
The absolute worst thing you can do is try to make friends with someone because you think they can do things for you, it’s just as bad as making friends with someone because you want to fuck them. If your friend does things for you try to be considerate and do things for them, if they listen to your problems and you don’t have the time to listen to theirs, they will notice.
  • Avoid gossip. Gossip in a circle of friends is like letting a poisonous snake in your bed. Eventually you’ll get bit in the ass.
  • Defend your friends. You don’t have to lie or cover up for their mistakes, but if someone says some obvious bullshit about your friend, slap them in the mouth.
  • Let them go. You can’t be compatible with everybody, sometimes you have to let it go, without a fight without drama, just let them go. When you realize this you can concentration efforts on the people you ARE compatible with.

That’s all I could really think of at the moment…

This is really, really good advice.

agreed!

i sure do complain a lot, though, even to people i don’t know that well. XD

I complain a fuck ton, too. Hahaha!!

Act II Progress Report + Projects by Other People

underthevangogh:

So far, I have eight stories finished and ready to go.

Considering I’ve been free from school for nearly a week and there are slated to be a total of fifteen stories in Act II—not counting the special that will follow it—that’s some pretty good progress! I’ve been posting the occasional teaser to the UtVG twitter as proof of my continuing to work despite all the distractions provided by games like Don’t Starve, League of Legends, and all the episodes of Restaurant: Impossible and Kitchen Nightmares that YouTube has to offer.

I’m curious to know if the two-stories-a-week update schedule is worth keeping or if I should go to just one story a week. If I bump it down to one, new stories would post on Wednesday. Thoughts?

Blood Kiss: Vampires, Film Noir, and Neil Gaiman

So…I really like vampires. I grew up on them—not the sparkly Twilight kind (although I guess they have their place in the world—but the pretty-one-minute, ugly-the-next Joss Whedon kind. The kind that were definitely metaphors personified by hot actors in the height of 90’s-era fashion.

Blood Kiss is not about those vampires (except that it does feature Amber Benson as one of the lead actors). Nor is it about the sparkly Twilight kind. But it IS about vampires. And it’s set in the 1940’s. Also, it’s set to feature Neil Gaiman portraying a character who is not just a characterized-version of himself. Check out the Kickstarter vid:

Neat, right? Yes, I’ve backed it, so perhaps spreading the word makes me a little biased, but I wouldn’t have backed it if I didn’t feel like this was something that would—pardon the pun—suck. I have a good feeling about the potential for this story to be an amazing one. And I mean, come on! It’s got freakin’ Amber Benson and Neil Gaiman! What’s not to love?

Speaking of Other Projects I Like—Vacant wants YOU!

I’ll just quote from the words of Miss Heather Nunnelly herself, since I’ve been trying to come up with a succinct way to sum all this up and I’ve still got nothing:

For the Vacant graphic novel, hopefully coming out sometime this summer, I would like guest art to appear at the back of the book. I already asked my Facebook friends if they would like to participate and a few people were interested. I am going to go ahead and open it up to the floor now.

Anyone can submit a piece. It can be a illustration or comic book page. The maximum is two pages, but try and keep it to one. That way I can get as many people into the comic as I can. if there is a huge turn out and a lot of people submit pages, then when July 15th rolls around, I will figure out a fair way of picking out which pages to print.

Interested? Click here to get the full details, and then celebrate because Vacant is getting a graphic novel format! The comic itself is presently on hiatus, but that just means you have plenty of time to start and catch up if you’ve never read it before. So que esperas? Get over there and start reading!

Awwwwww. Thank you! You’re awesome!!
